PSP Media Formats

The following types of Music are playable on the PSP:

  • MP3s
  • WAVs
  • WMA
  • ATRAC3+ files
  • MP4

What are these files?

  1. MP3 is actually short for MPEG Audio-Layer 3 files (Motion Pictures Experts Group) It is a form of audio compression capable of 10:1 compression with no noticeable quality loss
  2. WAV, short for Waveform Audio, is an audio format designed by Microsoft and IBM, and is used for the standard audio format on many PCs
  3. WMA, Windows Media Audio, was designed by Microsoft as an audio file format for the internet. It is sililar to MP3s, but has digital rights management (copy protection and usage restrictions) built-in by Microsoft.
  4. ATRAC3+ files, Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding, created by Sony for a secure and encrypted format for compressed audio. ATRAC3 is used in Sony’s Minidisc players and portable players such as the VAIO Music Chip and the Memory Stick Walkman.
  5. MP4, short for MPEG-4, can hold many types of data, such as AAC and MP3 audio, or MPEG-2 and H.264 video.Typically, files with the .mp4 extension contain both audio and video data.

How to add to the PSP:
Just drag/copy the files to X:/MUSIC, X = your PSP drive.

Acceptable Video Formats:

  • MPEG-4 (AAC)
  • H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (CABAC) (AAC) and Baseline Profile (AAC)

Acceptable Photo formats:

  • JPEG
  • TIFF
  • PNG
  • GIF
  • BMP

What are they?

  1. JPEG, Joint Photographic Experts Group, is a digital image file format designed for maximal image compression. JPEG graphics are capable of reproducing a full range of color while still remaining small enough for Web use. Most of the photographs you see on the Web are JPEG format.
  2. TIFF, Tagged Image File Format, an industry standard raster file format, which consists of the image and header information. TIFF is also supported by most desktop publishing and paint programs.
  3. PNG, Portable Network Graphics, is used for lossless compression and displaying images on the web. The advantages of PNG is that it supports images with millions of colors and produces background transparency without jagged edges.
  4. GIF, Graphic Interface Format, is the most widely used standard for web graphics, developed by Unisys and owned by Compuserve. Best suited for artificial images such as computer-generated art.
  5. BMP is a bitmap file format widely used in Windows PCs that stands for Basic Multilingual Plane

How to put them onto your PSP:
Drag/copy the pic to X:/PHOTO
You can also save pictures off of the PSP’s internet browser by putting the cursor over the Picture you want, then press triangle, and scroll over to File, and press save image

Miscellaneous Formats:

  • PTF
  • PBP
  • UMD
  • ISO
  • CSO

What are they?

  1. PTF is a theme type that i you can use on any PSP (OFW or CFW) that does not need to access any flash0 files.
  2. PBPs are the UPDATE, EBooT, and DEMO Files that go into either GAME, or GAME150.
  3. UMDs are the PSP Game discs
  4. ISOs are copies of the UMD games that you can download in the PSP Downloads section, they go in X:/ISO
  5. CSOs are compressed ISOs, they are basically the same as ISOs, but are smaller and usually have something ripped.
